The Newton

I heard from numerous people that the Cube was a pretty big flop. No personal experience there - just the word around the local Mac shop.

Hey, the Newton was awesome, well... except that it cost like $9999.00.

As far as the flower power iMac goes, all I know is my fiance would (almost literally) kill for one.

I wouldn't see it as failure, Apple just was too far ahead of the time. In the end everybody trys to copy Apple :-)
I still can remember when Lisa came out (yes, i'm that old)
but we didn't have the money to buy it. We rubbed our noses against the store windows for hours just to see it: the first computer with a GUI. Microsoft is based on this GUI after Bill stole it from Steve. The Flower Power/Blue Dalmatien iMac today is one of the most expensive on eBay, a true collectors item.
Some people call it failure, some people call it innovation :-)

As to the comments regarding the Flower Power/Blue Dalmatien iMac being popular...

Isn't that stamp with the picture of the airplane printed upside down on it the most valuable stamp in the world? That was a big mistake too. They're collectors items because of their obsurdity and rarity. Just because they sell for a lot on eBay doesn't mean people actually *want* them as computers. I mean, people sell grilled cheese sandwiches on eBay for hundreds of dollars...

yup, and steve stole from xerox, it's a tough world out there.

Any successful person or company will tell you that failure is a big part of success.

How many time has "The Donald" gone bankrupt.

Pete Rose holds the record for the most hits in a career. Guess who holds the record for most strikeouts?

Hey, not all ideas work. Of course, you have the option of never trying.

To be fair, Word 6 was NOT Apple, it was Microsoft's attempts to use a shared code base for Mac and Windows. Mac users hated the Windows interface, the horrible install, and the confusing interface (to Mac users). Microsoft learned its lesson and created the MacBU--they put out awesome stuff.

Or at least that's how I understand the issue.

Then how come Macfolk like Word 5.0 so much?

Remember, these aren't Apple failures. They're Macintosh failures.

I'm the author of the article. I chose MS Word 6.0 (or Office 4.2) because it reflected poorly on Apple's computers. I made a Top 10 PDA Flops list earlier, so I decided not to mention the Newton.
