The Technology of Snow?
Yup, it baffled me too when the guyz over at livedigitally.com sent me an e-mail: "We launched our new column today, Ld guide, a sort of "essentials guide" to a given topic. Our first topic is "snow." My dog likes snow. I, on the other paw, have a passionate dislike for any temperature below 68 degrees. I think it has something to do with my first childhood memory --sitting in a tub, screaming my lungs out, while a huge nurse stood over me, dumping ice cubes on my nekked childly body. Still, I ventured over to their site. ("...we consider ourselves a web-magazine, not a blog!")

Much to my wondering eyes didn't appear a technology glossary of the variations among snowflakes. Instead, they ran down a list of things they consider essential for the snow. (Pssst..., guyz... More than a 6-pack of Pepsi and a pint of Dewars --for medicinal purposes, of course-- is a waste.)

  • Giro Fuse Audio Ski Helmet
  • Canon SD 300
  • Motorola Talkabouts T5950
  • Rio Cali (256MB)
  • Suunto S6 Watch
  • The North Face MET5 Jacket
  • Samsung SC-X105 "Sports Cam"
Now, before you head over there to take a look you might as well know that I tend to disagree with their Motorola recommendation and I'm sure Alice would have something long and derisive to say about the RIO Cali. The rest are sort of okay, except for the Samsung Sports Cam which is cool in a geeky sort of way.

I aree. Havin' grown up in Steamboat Springs & near Aspen I find their list a bit long. Essentials are necessary items... A pair of RayBans & a boda bag filled w/ the right adult beverage used to be our only requirements. Today I'd say its a pair of "Rudy Projects", a personal beacon locator & a Camelbak of Irish Coffee. If you have a yard sale carrin' all their stuff & its gonna be an expensive day not to mention they are obviously not skiing interesting enough slopes to be weighed down w/ that kind of weight.

They forgot the iPod madness. The Burton jackets with integrated iPod controllers on the arms are sweet.
