Some Of My Best Fans

For the first column in his new series --offering hardcore hardware trips & tricks -- Bill gives advice on keeping the noise down...
Yeah, if you're tired of looking at Alice's photo you can check out my new column, "Best Bits," over at Desktop Pipeline, a CMP online pub. And before you start, the column isn't aimed at hardcore technies, despite the "hardcore" in the tease. Personally, I like to think it will strike accord in the hearts of part-time tinkers and eventually- to-be-hardcore techies.

"Strike a chord"! Please!

To make a fan quiet I just apply a drop or two of Phil Tenacious oil to the bearing. I havent't seen a fan yet (even Antec fans) that haven't been made quieter.

http://www.philwood.com/webcatolog/pg16.htm

Works like a charm, no more rattle or squeal from fans.

If it's good enough for my Road Record hubs, it's good enough for an Antec fan!

I run my computer under water and it makes no noise whatsoever.

Psst..., Tod... It's not the rattle or the squeal. At that point you replace a fan. It's the sound of the fan blades moving the air. Somehow I don't think Phil, Tenacious or otherwise, would affect that.

Who's Tod?

The vertical wobble in the rotation of the blades (resulting in a cavitation of the airflow, thus louder airflow) caused by unwanted drag in the bearing race was the problem I solved with the oil.

Anyone signed anonymous is Todd... It's a long story. Still, there is that nasty rush of air no matter how level and bevel the world is. It varies with fan rpm.

If you simply love the silence of a finely tuned pc you should visit silentpcreview.com where they cover all the bases in great detail.

To be honest, Robert, it's very detailed but also more info than most peole really need.

Sorry Bill, I am a little nutty when it comes to a nice quiet work enviroment.

For me, if the computer gets too loud I just turn up the volume on the TV.

Isn't there a way we can look at Alice's picture _and_ read your column???

Maybe you can watermark your pages with her picture???

/a random Alice stalker :-)

Too old to remember if I registered before, but not too old to appreciate looking at a pretty lady. I'd rather see a new, pretty picture of Alice than listen to you :O)

DOM aka Dave

ps

I like the previous comment about having her as a watermark. Right on!

I didn't want to put it this way, guys, but if I have to spend most of my time scrounging up work instead of having a steady gig, then Alice is going to have to spend most of her free time handling the blog. That's on top of her full-time job. You have any idea of how that will start to wear her down? She'll age prematurely --almost overnight. She'll get tired, depressed, cranky, pick up crows feet, and under-eye bags... You getting the picture here?

So, when I ask you to show some support for a new column I'm doing, I'm not asking for me. I'm asking for Alice. I'm not thinking of my mortgage and my credit card bills. Trust me. I have her best interests at heart.

(pssst.... Alice! You think they bought that?)

That was a good one: Save Alice from aging by reading Bill's new column. By the way, I just got carded yesterday, so I guess it's working!

Hey, that's funny... Me too! (Oh, wait, you said "carded." Never mind.)
