Sign the End of the World Is Near
In a speech at the Wireless Communications Association in San Jose, Calif., Intel Executive Vice President Sean Maloney is expected to encourage commercial service providers and public agencies such as city governments and municipalities to work together in building out new broadband infrastructure. Maloney will outline the company's high-level policy position and will speak out against efforts to ban municipally owned networks.

While it would be quite a boost for Intel to have the government set up the infrastructure for their product, don't we have better things to do with our tax money. Considering the Feds borrowed ~$50 billion (yes BILLION) last month to pay bills, I think that spending tax money in this way is ridiculous. It's funny how broadband has gone from nothing to a necessity in only 10 short years.

Here we go. Cable TV all over again. Will the "providers" be asking for a franchise in my town to build their infrastructure to be able to be viable. God knows Time Warner and Charter could never had made any profits if they hadn't been able to establish such a method of acheiving monopolies (tongue FIRMLY in cheek).

How about letting the free market establish such an infrastructure and letting government establish the infrastructure where the market can't (read won't) and it is needed for the public good (http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/2005-01-10-broadband-bellsouth-our_x.htm).

How many negatives can we find in the following partial sentence and what does this fragment mean as to Mr. Maloney's intent:

"will speak out against efforts to ban municipally owned networks"

Sorry folks for referencing USA Today but the article does have some interesting points.
