New Motion-Detecting Cell Phone
Samsung has developed the first motion-detecting cell phone. Covered by 22 patents, the device can delete messages with a quick back and forth wave, and dial numbers by spelling out a name in the air.

Alice's Rant of the Week: Are they nuts? I guess this proves that we have lost all shame when using cell phones and are actually ready for some more. Remember when you felt a little weird talking on a headset while walking around or driving? The thought that it looked like you may be insane by talking to no one nearby? Notice how no one seems to care anymore? Well, that is nothing compared to people walking down the street frantically spelling out "c-a-l-l - b-o-b" in the air. Cell phones are turning us into walking lunatics with every feature.

Bill telegraphs in this comment: Now what would be really nice is if the act of stealing the phone and running away with it would automatically cause the phone to dial 911 and activated its GPS.

i certainly agree that people are getting dumber with these things, but i still think someone looks pretty stupid when they use one in public. i started wearing a headset early on and my friends thought it was stupid, but they all wear one now. i work for kinko's (oops FedEx Kinko's) and i think its incredibly rude when someone can't get off the cellphone to pay for something. it's even better when they have a complex order to show me and won't get off the phone.

maybe samsung is just gonna try to help us identify morons from more of a distance....

Cell phones have been nuts for a while. Phones have cameras, internet, instant messaging, games, gps, mp3, and soon TV??? Where will it end? I guess I'm just old but I want a phone...nothing else, just a phone I can dial and talk on.

Just remember, Bob, it all started with Caller I.D.

Hmmm... OK, I like caller ID :)

What will be REALLY nice is when the make a cell phone that can ACTUALLY MAKE AN EFFING CALL RELIABLY from anywhere (within reason), without dropping the call, failing to connect, or some other nonsense. Wasn't digital cellular supposed to make it "just like being there"? And what about GSM? What a joke. These cell phone guys are scamming the whole country (or the whole world). I don't want to look like leonard bernstein when i'm trying to make a cell phone call, I just want the goddamned thing to connect me. You know, like the analog "brick" cell phones used to be able to do 10 years ago?!?! Sheesh.
