More Than a Mac Mini

PC enthusiasts have embraced small desktops such as the LPC-401X from Little PC. It's 10 inches long, 5.8 inches wide and 2.8 inches high.

Touchdown Industries is attempting to appeal to sports fans with a small desktop that fits into a football helmet. This PC for pigskin lovers measures 9 inches high and 7 inches wide.

(Yes, those are blurbs directly from the companies. It's Sunday. It's my hour off. Then again, be thankful I didn't include Dell's claim to minisculity. It included and LCD display and a keyboard.)

More than a Mac Mini is very appropriate...The cost is doubled. Cool stuff but Apple's price point for a useful home computer cannot be denied.

The more I look aroound at mini-ITX and other small board based computers, the more convinced I am that Apple is purposely taking a bath on the Mac Mini to get market share. Not that this is bad thing, but if cheap clone makers can't offer these things at lower prices, something has to be up. Good for Apple for driving some interest in smaller machines - I hope it goes well for them and creates more of a competitive market for those who want to keep at least one PC around that looks halfway cool.

I went to the LittlePC website.
Their LPC-401X Standard is $1095!
This is way too expensive unless the form factor is all compelling.
