Mozilla on a Roll, Thunderbird 1.0 Officially Released.
Well, the Mozilla Organization did it again. Thunderbird is yet another excellent, open-source offering from my favorite developing company. For those who aren´t aware, Thunderbird is an email client very similar to MS Outlook, except that it is more intuitive, has more features, and is much more secure. The biggest clue on security is that it runs on the Mozilla engine, therefore making it immune to IE bugs that often plague Outlook.

You have to be wondering if Microsoft is worried, the Firefox 1.0 release has gotten 9 million downloads so far, knocked IE below 90% market share in Europe, and now with Thunderbird effectively offers a free, better alternative to all of Microsoft´s internet suite. Of course, I am not the only one here at AliceandBill.com that thinks so, both Alice and Bill have made posts supporting the brash new player on the browser front. Here´s to a good conclusion of the 2nd Browser War; even if IE manages to win again (which I don´t see happening) the competition is going to force IE to offer a better internet experience.

Download Thunderbird 1.0 and Firefox 1.0.

On a slight aside, although some people here at A&B.com (cough *Bill* cough) have been hard on AOL lately, and I still believe they scared my internet experience for life when I first got on the internet with a 486 running AOL 3.0, we do have to credit them for partly making this possible with a 2 million dollar donation to give the Mozilla Organization a head-start in July of 2003.

I've been using both Firefox and Thunderbird for everything except Windows Update (and a handful of other sites I seldom visit) for quite some time now. They're both excellent and Firefox in particular hands IE's @## to it on a platter.

Thunderbird on the Mac (like most ported software) isn't there yet. One glaring omission is that it doesn't work with Address Book or with iSync. Once it does, I'll definitely switch.

And I just want to give a shout out to Cyrus for having the cojones to give AOL some props. Despite their locked-in Evil Empire status, they do deserve a bit of credit for making this sort of thing possible.

And then scorn for effectively killing WinAMP, but hey. You win some and you lose some.
