ASIMO Getting Taller, Fatter, and Faster.
So now ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) can do the hustle as well as doing a little hustle on its own. Don't worry, you can probably catch it. Top speed for the not-so-little guy is around 3km/hr (1.9mph).
Hey, don't knock it you bunch of chair-bound computer potatoes. If you thought walking was tough (raise leg, fall forward, don't fall completely to the ground --you remember walking, don't you?), think about the more complex dynamics of running. Both feet need to be off the ground between strides! As well (and any joggers in the audience will certainly apprecite it), running involves a series of harsh secondary shocks. In human beings, that means shins, knees, heart, lungs, brain, among other organs, banging against the infrastructure. For a robot, well, just consider how concerned you are (you are, right?) about tossing your portable on the couch when you get home.
Right now, ASIMO is capable of replacing the average booth babe at an auto show. Along with walking, running, and shaking his hips, he can:
Recognise moving objects
Follow movements
Greet people
Recognize and respond to 50 different Japanese phrases
Come when beckoned
Walk up and down stairs
If they add writing to the list, I'm in trouble....
