Why Sony's LocationFree TV is Must-Not-See TV
The day the flat panel TV sprang forth was just the beginning of how we would literally view our TV sets in this new century. Anyone can tell you that, but we are here to warn you away from some half-baked products that sound great, but are sure to disappoint.
Case in point: Sony's new LocationFree TV or LF-X1. The idea is great. Why not have a wireless base station connected to your cable box and TiVo and so on, and then carry the TV portion anywhere in the house or even outside, and enjoy your TV anywhere you like? If you want a blow by blow, LiveDigitally has a great step by step look at this product, but we'll just skip to the chase:
Until battery technology is improved and wireless is faster for streaming video reliably, all of these devices are simply not viable. It wasn't until my Pentium M-based laptop that I started carrying it around everywhere, thanks to a 5 hour battery life, and the laptop has been around for decades! The Sony unit has a pathetic 90 minute battery life, or you end up lugging extension cords and the power supply all over the house, completely defeating the concept of going wireless. Get a laptop with a decent battery life and enjoy the Internet wirelessly, or save the $1,500 towards a bigger TV set in front of a really comfy chair. You'll thank us for it later.
