Exploding Cell Phones a Growing Problem
Reports are on the rise that cell phones can explode or burst into flames thanks to bad batteries and chargers. 83 reports have been filed in the past 2 years. Now, call me cynical, but 83 out of the millions of units on the market doesn't sound like a real problem to me, but then again, I haven't lost all my hair in a fireball while chatting.

According to AP Newswire, "Some consumer advocates say the cause goes beyond bad batteries making their way to the market. They point to the increasing pressure on battery and phone makers to fit more capabilities into small instruments. 'If you're cramming more and more power in a small space, what you're making is a small bomb,' said Carl Hilliard, president of the California-based Wireless Consumers Alliance, which has been tracking incidents of cell phone fires and explosions.

"Though legitimate batteries can go wrong, there is a greater chance that poorly made, counterfeit ones will lack safety devices to detect overheating or overcharging. The lithium-ion batteries found in most cell phones can overheat if, for example, heat vents are covered. The CPSC is trying to determine if improved venting is enough by itself to ensure safety. 'We have seen temperatures as high as 600 degrees, and you can have a torch-like effect if these batteries don't function properly,' Wolfson said.

"Angela Karasek, a 21-year-old paralegal in Philadelphia, bought her Motorola phone and battery together from a Nextel store. She awoke one night a few weeks ago to what she described as a pinging sound and then saw fire. Her cell phone battery had blown out, igniting a doll about three feet away. She ran to her parents' room for help, and her father quickly put out the fire."

I think this is the salient quote from the AP story: "Safety officials have received 83 reports of cell phones exploding or catching fire in the past two years, usually because of bad batteries or chargers."

That's 83 reports --over two years. How many cell phones are there in the real world? I had a friend's cell phone set her pocketbook on fire. Why? She dropped the phone in there and it fell with its charger contacts on top of her keys.

I'm not saying that there are no bad batteries or bad charges. There are. But I think this is just another case of an inexperience AP reporter taking stuff out of context and blowing it up far bigger than it is without offering any answers for why these things happened. "Michael Sathre, who is expected to fully recover from his wounds, was picking his fully charged Verizon LG cell phone off the floor when it exploded by his side." Did he drop it? (Ever drop a BIC disposable lighter?)

I totally agree. When laptops started getting more widespread there weer flaming laptop stories too. Anyone out there from the 1950's remember flaming TV set stories we cite as further proof that this is just hysterical flame throwing? (so to speak)

To be honest, and a bit rude, the most disturbing thing for me was that the women in the story was a professional paralegal, over 21, but living at home with her parents and had her doll catch on fire.

Now, that is scary!

You're cruel. I like that. ;-)

That tears it. I guess I'm going to have to use oven mitts and a hands free kit from now on.

Bluetooth Fireballs on the Rise

Early reports are in, and they're conclusive. At least 3 hands-free headsets using bluetooth technology caught fire and burned off the ears of a soccer-mom, a ruthless businessman, and in a surprising bit of irony, Mike Tyson. Jabra spokesman Michael Thompson commented that "these devices are safe" at a newsconference held this afternoon, but consumers should be aware of this new problem. YOU COULD DIE.

This hasn't been published. YET. Call it a prediction. NOTHING IS SAFE! Use misleading statistics and rampant CAPSLOCK ABUSE to instill fear in the hearts and minds of the world!

OMG, I just realized that my iPod could KILL ME!
*runs away*

That is the funniest picture for a story ever.

Dave

that write up makes it sound like they're intentionally manufacturing bombs but it's our fault for pressuring them into it.
I guess it's my hope that when I state requirements for a product that the manufacturer would voluntarily disclose that my requirements imply that the device is a bomb before they allow me to hold it to my head while mindlessly yakking into it.
Biggest sentance evAR!

Well, you did read the disclaimer section in the cell contract, didn't you?

That picture isn't funny, It was my cell phone going off!

Person goes to the doctor and complains "it hurts when I do this".

Doctor says "don't do that".

Hey Alice... Rush Limbaugh just repeated the exact same thing on his show!! You scooped him!
