China Shutters 1,600 Internet Cafes
Just when you thought China was becoming more western comes a reminder of how different things are. Today, China has cracked down on 1,600 Internet cafes and fined the owners over $12 million for allowing kids to play violent video games. Source Reuters.

"Investigators have inspected 1.8 million Internet cafes looking for unlicensed operations or those that let children play violent games meant for adults, the Ministry of Culture said. China encourages Internet use for education and business but bans sexually oriented content on Chinese Web sites and tries to block access to foreign sites deemed pornographic or subversive. The country has the world's second-largest population of Internet users after the United States, with 87 million people online."

Shuters? or Shutters?

Yikes!

She says and shudders.

Is this news? Less than 1 out of 1000 were told to cease operations. Just like any other country if you operate a business without a license or flaunt the law eventually the government will come find you and shut you down.

Now if they operators that were closed were tossed into a boiling pot of oil for merely being open after hours (all other laws being observed) then you'd have some news. (But it'd be about harsh sentencing.)

Open an internet cafe without a business license here in the United States and see if the local city doesn't come calling...
