Almost a personal video player
In what may signal the beginning of the arrival of the next generation of personal video players, rivaling Apple's iPod, Mattel (of all people!) introduced its Juicebox. Or... it could just be a high tech version of the old stereopticons. Problem is, Mattel took a great concept --the ability to carry along videos-- and, perhaps through an intricate process of greed and stupidity, decided it would only play Mattel's own pre-recorded video cartridges. If not for that, it's $59 price would be perfect, despite the somewhat less than smooth video playback. (Ever use a video phone? Does the term "nervous and jerky" ring a bell?)
Well, before there were Microwaves there was the Barbie Playtime Oven and its lightbulb. One never knows.
