Time to pick on the Intern!
HP's Lightscribe technology? Aiyeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! Two big problems, despite what HP claims the ultimate cost might be: If my wonderful HP inkjet all-in-one god-knows-how-it-works printer messes up one of my Stomper paper labels I can crumple it up, throw it away, and only have wasted the two or three hours it took to print the little label and not the 35 minutes I spent burning my 168 minute DVD. (Don't get me started on that whole "2-hour DVD" idiocy!) If the HP Lightscribe laser messes up in whatever that coating is on their specially produced disc, there goes the disc.

On the other side of the picture, I wonder how many times I'd have had to change the laser over the course of the nearly 500 DVDs I've made so far. (Or even what the laser's duty cycle is.)

(BTW: Great job setting that ball up on the tee for me, Cyrus.)

I think the spec is like 100,000 Read/write sessions, but I didn´t take the time to research it out. Still gotta admit it makes your CD pretty cool. Maybe this won´t be used much by home-users, but I could definetely see some classy Professional CDs hitting the market with a fancy logo. It does give the consumer one more reason to buy an actual disc, and we all know they need one.

This is going to be EVERY BIT as big as Yamaha's Disc T@2. BELIEVE IT!

100,000 read/write sessions for the laser making a CD or DVD, but I'd find it difficult to believe that number would hold water when including the etching of labels.

Well, companies have the ability to shell out the money for new lasers. Thats why I think if this has much success at all, it will be in the Music Industry, just one more reason for someone to buy that "platinum" disc.

No, no, you miss the point... This is a -consumer- product.

That doesn´t prevent it from being used commercially. I think it will be a novelty product for a bit, then drop off the radar. I do think though that we will see at least a couple commercial discs with this, there is no reason for the music industry to avoid any product that can boost sales. They need it, and people like a flashy product.

Wow -

Addition of two interns has really increased the level of postings on this site! I'm seeing few other benefits thus far.
