Rogue Keychain Remote Unleashed
This is one of those "inventions" you know could have come out a lot sooner, but now that someone did invent it, a huge buying frenzy is underway. The premise is simple: a $14.99 keychain remote called TV B-Gone that snaps off any public TV is apparently being snapped up at a pace that suggests most people are dying to cut off the TV noise in most public places or perhaps when the kids are outof control.

Invented by San Francisco resident Mitch Altman, "The keychain fob works like a universal remote control but one that only turns TVs on or off. With a zap of a button, the gizmo goes through a string of about 200 infrared codes that controls the power of about 1,000 television models. Altman said the majority of TVs should react within 17 seconds, though it takes a little more than a minute for the gizmo to emit all the trigger codes. Altman, 47, first got the idea for TV-B-Gone a decade ago when he was out with friends at a restaurant and they found themselves all glued to the perched TV instead of talking to each other. No one was around to turn the TV off." Source: AP

Why do we picture fights in sports bars as the screen snaps off just at the crucial touchdown moment, or when breaking news is causing a stir. This gadget will certainly appeal to the mean- spirited pranksters. Our suggestion: sell a $25.99 version that also lets you change channels, and you may have the ultimate remote for those who just have to have the remote control at all times. (I know I do. --Bill)

Changing the channel on each of the 200 or so codes .. for each channel .. would be painfully annoying.

I'd be happy with a mute button.

Now it's time to invent a $0.50 opaque plastic screen that businesses can stick over the remote receivers on their television sets - so as to avoid the ensuing brawls and resultant litigation. I'll be a millionaire!

17 seconds!? I know that those emitters are not expensive. How about putting 2 of them side by side, and running through half the list with one and half with the other. The wake request signals have to be different enough to split the list once in some ratio without crosstalk, or maybe even more with more emitters with separate processors and lists. Get it down to 3-5 seconds.

Love the mute button idea! I was thinking that a Cell Phone_B_Gone must not be far away. Of course blockers are illegal here, but surely having a keychain device to zap an annoying loud talker's cel call to no signal would be a very nice little toy to have.

I can deal with cell phones way better than that friggin obnoxious Nextel *dee-dee-deet!* *dee-dee-deet!* *dee-dee-deet!* *dee-dee-deet!* SHUT UP!

I'm thinking of just getting the Sidekick II so I don't have to actually talk to anyone.

And thanks for pulling out the most important detail (which I somehow missed??), metermax. 17 seconds for MOST sets. The rest could take MORE than 17 seconds. If it doesn't come with LI-Ion batteries, this could be a one-time-use fob. It's a cool proof-of-concept hack, I guess, but I'll stick with the IR remote software on my IR-capable Palm. ;p
