New Peeping Tom Cell Phone Attachment
Oh My Dept: The Internet is buzzing over a new night filter from a Japanese company that when added to cell phone renders shirts, pants, and even dark bikini underwear invisible, leaving the unknowing person literally exposed. Dubbed the "pervert filter" this $150 device from Yamada Denshi is available for sale online and Vodaphone is apparently already up in arms with the growing popularity.

The London Times reported, "The cameras work like a night-sight, picking up infrared radiation heat which is given off by the body. The body is hotter than the clothes, so the radiation that you see gives you the outline of the person being filmed.

"Vodafone has condemned the abuse of mobile-phone mounted cameras, even though it is a technology which the British company pioneered in Japan. Vodafone and rival networks in Japan have particularly focused on the potential for invasion of privacy in their 'best practice' sermons to customers.

"A spokesman for the company said yesterday: 'This is a third-party device so our control is limited. Obviously we would never sell a phone that was enabling someone to see someone naked. That would be a contradiction of all our policies and we will do everything to stop such devices spreading.'

"The official purpose of the filter is for taking pictures at night. While openly acknowledging the see-through functions of its gadget, Yamada is at great pains to insist that the technology should be used for 'academic purposes'."

Uh yeah, I'm sure that's what they'll be used for. Anyone remember the Sony Camcorder that was yanked from the market when it was discovered that its night filter made clothes see-through?

I don't see what the big deal is. Love your body Alice, and let others love it too! ;)

One used to be able to get glasses that did the same thing from the backs of comic books. (Bill should remember that).

I hope nobody takes this seriously. Oh wait, people are really gullible and can't think clearly. 1. body heat is warmer than background radiation but barely. 2. clothes are not transparent to infrared. 3. uniformly radiating bodies would should no detail.

Oh well. It will probably sell a lot of camera phones.

Sony didn't really pull their Nightshot cameras. They simply prevented people from lowering the exposure in Nightshot mode. As a result, in Nightshot mode, in a bright setting, the image is over-exposed (pure white). I was curious about the validity of this rumor, so I did some research. It appears to be quite true. In fact, the new Sony video cameras can be quite easily tweaked without opening up the camera to re-enable the ability to reduce the exposure.

Also, the filter is completely legit. It is an Infrared filter. It filters out all visible light. Apparently, you can also buy a $50 IR filter lens adapter from B+W for any digital camera or video camera. There are two reasons why these filters work. The first is that a camera's CCD responds to both visible AND infrared light. Therefore, if you block out ALL visible light in a bright environment (i.e., outdoors in the sun) with an IR filter lens, then only infrared light is passed into the CCD. The second reason is that infrared light, with a low refraction index, doesn't get blocked by sheer material as easily as visible light does. So infrared light from the sun, for example, bounces off unsuspecting folks wearing sheer material (bikinis, dresses etc) and straight into the voyeur's CCD lens. Pretty creepy.

Sean.

Good one - Mr. Anonymous. Better not be Bill! --Alice

<~~ No, I'm not Bill: both to exonerate him and also to not give him credit for it. :)
