Grand Theft Auto ... Stolen!
First DOOM 3 was leaked on the 'Net, then Halo 2, and even the source code for Half Life 2 was jacked, but now the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto San Andreas has been leaked onto the Internet and the entire game, and images from the manual are making their way around file sharing networks.

Rockstar games is having a stroke, since the game is set for release in literally a few days (I have my copy on pre-order and cannot wait) but we find it ironic that the industry that pioneered sharing free versions and free levels and trial periods is getting bitten by the players they helped for so long. Now, that's player hatin'.

You play GTA????

Of course. I built and launched CNET's Gaming website wher we played ery ame every day, and to this day play GTA Vice City. Can't wait till the next one.

Alice allowed that:
"we find it ironic that the industry that pioneered sharing free versions and free levels and trial periods is getting bitten by the players they helped for so long. Now, that's player hatin'."

This dosn't even remotely make sense. Are you refering to id's pioneering give away a gamelet and they'll pay for the game? If so it has nothing to do with Rockstar.

Please ... oh ghod GTA. Check http://somethingawful.com for a review.

Actually, I do believe she was referring to the gaming industry. Hence her use of "the industry that pioneered sharing free versions" and not company.

As for the game itself, well, to each his own. I have played GTA and found it kind of amusing myself. Everyone has thier likes and dislikes in games as they do in music and everything else. If she likes the game then good for her. If you don't, then good for you. Myself, I'll probably stick to my style of gaming and go pk someone who gives me a reason. =-)

I find it amusing that a game that makes light of theft, killing, and wanton destruction, would fall victim to an actual crime. You reap what you sow. It's probably just a marketing ploy anyway. "This game is sooooo good that someone was willing to go to jail to play it."

It was id that pioneered giving away free versions. Who else has, except in id's wake, they set the standard. This is why I object to the gaming industry "the devils playground" riding on id's well earned good name.

Pen:
Just a couple names. Apogee. Commander Keen. She's talking the INDUSTRY. Ie, the collection of all the various gaming companies. Many of which have done free/trial/shareware/ect versions both after AND BEFORE ID. Being as you might not have been playing games back then, you might not know this but ID was no where near the first to do that. I'd go on, but if you do some simple searches, I'm sure you can satisfy any curiousity on supporting points.

Commander Keen was id my friend. If you could only find another id game and "Rise of the Triad" I'll consider my point made.

Read the linkage. I forgot that ID was behind keen as I only paid attention to the Apogee name, but there were other companies doing this before them as well. I'm not gonna hunt down names of those early games but I'm sure if you REALLY don't want to give up being wrong about ID pioneering it solo, you should just refer back to that link which will fill you in on the history of Shareware. Now I will admit that for the most part they were the ones who put out the best games, but they were far from the first. I remember back in 1988 getting this really cool side scroller as my college comp-sci teacher introduced the class to shareware. Funnily enough, this predates the release of Keen. You can reference that by following the link below.

We've had shareware in all catagories of software since the dawn of time (that would be in the 60s sometime;). I don't think my objection to Alice's player-hater characterization can be countered by the existance of shareware in the field of games.
