D-Link 2100AP Wireless Access Point Bombs?
So who'd a thought that within the space of just a few days we'd be panning a D-Link product twice? (See Alice's thoughts on the D900.) This time, however, we're really talking about a bomb --or at least the appearance of one.

A guy in New South Wales, who shall remain nameless for reasons that are about to become obvious, decided to buy a D-Link 2100AP wireless AP and yank the guts out of the case, epoxy them into plastic PCB case, stick it out where the sun does shine, and, within 10 hours, out come the cops to dig up the wires from his lawn and grill the guy. Somebody in the neighborhood reported that it was a bomb.

We live in tough times, right? Well, they guy is miffed and a half at the police for the way they handled the affair. Says they could have been more sensitive.

Wait, I need more facts adn this is intriguing. I can take anything with a wire sticking out of it and if I dig a hole and put it in my backyard, a paranoid neighbor could just sa easily call the cops, so it's not D-Link's product per se right?

It sounds like the guy way trying to share his wireless with people nearby and made the thing waterproof? But why would he bury it underground insetad of mounting the thing on his roof? Very confused. But then again, I remember the guy who tied helium baloons on his lawnchair and shot himself up into LAX flight traffic, so I guess people will be idiots the world round.

The box was mounted on the backyard fence. The cable from the computer to the AP ran from the house, underground, to the fence. And you guessed it, they have this sort of WiFi community thing going on in NSW. I think they're trying to contact Brazil.

The LawnChair / Ballon story is an urban legand. Sounds like the guy has cranks for neighbors. Personally, when I have neighbors like that, (the cranky kind) I usually use my political connections to make them miserable until they decide to move.

RE: weather balloon

His name was Larry Walters. Given that, you can find tons of sites supporting that this was truth. They also did this on Pilot 3 of the Discovery Channel's show MythBusters. Here's one of many sites:

Whether or not you choose to believe it is up to you.

Wow. I sit both stunned, and corrected. The really odd thing is, I was living in LA in 1982, and don't remember this at all. Ahh, the things that strong chemicals will do to the brain...
